The Great River Road: The Ultimate Road Trip

Great River Road – The Ultimate Road Trip

Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to travel along the entire Mississippi River? From Minnesota all the way down to Louisiana? Well wonder no more.  Did you know that there is a national scenic byway that takes you from northern Minnesota all the way to the Gulf of Mexico? It’s called the Great River Road National Scenic Byway and its waiting for you to explore.

The Great River Road National Scenic Byway is the longest byway in North America.  Measuring a whopping 3,000 miles plus along the Mississippi River, it takes you through a total of 10 states and hundreds of small towns.  The byway is well known for showcasing the history, culture, recreation, nature, and beautiful scenery along the Mississippi River.

The drive itself takes about 36 hours from start to finish if you drive straight through, but many people take a few days or even a few weeks to explore the wonders of the small towns along the way.  The trail is marked by the iconic green and white pilots wheel road signs.  Along the route, you’ll get the chance to explore the local culture, dine on local cuisine, and view the breathtaking scenery.  Fall is the perfect time of year to venture out on the Great River Road trail because you’ll get to enjoy the most colorful foliage along the river.

There are many tourist attractions along the way including interpretive centers, locks and dams, and scenic overlooks in every state. Some of the popular places to stop include:

    1. National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium , Dubuque, IA
    2. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Collinsville, IL
    3. Mark Twain Boyhood home and museum, Hannibal, MO
    4. Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, LA

These are just a few of the many “must –sees” along the route.  So, gas up your RV and get ready to take the ultimate road trip through the middle of the country.  There are plenty of campgrounds along the way for when you get tired and need a place to stay for the night.
